Smallfield, Stacy, DrOT, OTR/L, BCG, FAOTA

Clinical Interests

Dr. Smallfield’s clinical interests include adult physical rehabilitation and gerontology, with previous work in long-term acute care, post-acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, long-term care and ergonomics. She also has non-traditional occupational therapy practice experience as an innovation designer for the largest non-profit provider of older adult care and services in the U.S. She is Board Certified in Gerontology (BCG) through the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Research Interests

Dr. Smallfield’s scholarly activity focuses on issues in gerontology and assistive technology, most recently studying computer tablet training among older adults with and without vision loss. She also studies best practices in teaching and learning, including the use of occupational therapy theory in education and practice.

Dr. Smallfield teaches occupational therapy theory, evidence-based practice and occupational therapy assessment.

Background

After earning her master’s degree in occupational therapy from the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis in 1996, Dr. Smallfield worked as an occupational therapist in several adult physical rehabilitation and gerontology settings until joining the faculty at the University of South Dakota (USD) in 2003. While there, she taught course content in adult physical rehabilitation, evidence-based practice, occupational therapy theory, therapeutic adaptation, and the environment. In 2007, she earned her doctoral degree in occupational therapy from Nova Southeastern University and since then has published scholarly work on a variety of topics related to gerontology, assistive technology, and other topics. She has collaborated with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) on a number of systematic reviews and practice guidelines on topics including older adults with low vision, home modifications, Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, and productive aging. She served in a variety of capacities while at USD including interim associate program director, occupational therapy admissions chairperson, and as a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subject research. In 2016, she returned to the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis as a member of the faculty and as assistant director of the entry level doctoral program. Dr. Smallfield has been actively involved professionally, serving as president of the South Dakota Occupational Therapy Association (2010-2012), the editor of the Gerontology Special Interest Section Quarterly (2013-2016), and as a member of the Roster of Accreditation Evaluators for the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. Dr. Smallfield was named to AOTA’s Roster of Fellows in 2015.
