Evidence-Based Exercise and Self-Management Programs (ESMP)

The scope of work includes using a public health approach to help adults take control of their health and move toward wellness and management of chronic symptoms. Some of the scholarly activities addressed in this lab involve existing programs that are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while others are created to serve as evidence-based, OT-specific interventions. Current projects center on breast cancer survivorship for African-American women and trauma-informed care of youth. Future projects may consider the role of OT in diabetes self-management.

General Description of Student Activities

Students selecting this scholarly experience will be involved in program development and evaluation of ESMP from the ground up. The students will be instrumental in creating systems for coordination of the services mentioned above. They will also help to determine new potential referral sources to the ESMP programs, and to evaluate their success once delivered. Students will learn about community SM programs and assist with the delivery of these programs.

Examples of Projects

  • Development of African-American Activity Card Sort for survivors of breast cancer
  • Development/evaluation of a self-management program for African-American women survivors of breast cancer
  • Acquired brain injury and depression: Increasing student clinician competency in a community clinic setting
