Assessments for Executive Dysfunction following Stroke and other mild neurological injuries

Current research has found that up to 60% of the population of people with mild neurological injury, e.g., mild stroke or mTBI, can have executive dysfunction which has been shown to impair reintegration back into complex everyday life activities such as driving and work. Join us for this course on June 5th as Tim Wolf, OTD, MSCI, OTR/L, shares in-depth information and knowledge about current assessment and intervention strategies to address executive dysfunction in adults with mild neurological injury. Current and emerging methods of assessment will be discussed and demonstrated, specifically the use of performance-based assessments to identify executive dysfunction. Current intervention strategies that target transfer and generalization to real-world environments will be discussed and demonstrated, specifically, the use of cognitive strategy training.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe occupational performance limitations seen in individuals with executive dysfunction as a result of mild neurological injury
  • describe and use a mixed method approach to identify executive dysfunction following mild neurological injury
  • describe at least one performance-based assessment covered in this course
  • describe how to interpret executive function assessment results
  • verbalize how to structure rehabilitation sessions to promote generalization and transfer
  • describe cognitive strategy training techniques to help clients compensate for executive dysfunction in real-world environments.
